Free (yes really) Books

Is there anything better than free books? If anything, I think randomly encountered free books might just take the cake. Since I moved to New York, I’ve had a few wonderful and unexpected encounters with free books, ranging from a series of books left along the stone wall behind St. Mark’s-in-the-Bowery, a few left in the kitchen at work, a little pile at the foot of some construction scaffolding, and, of course, the guy in the Union Square subway station who is always trying to give away free copies of the Bhagavad Gita. (Tempting!)

My question for you all is thus: Where have you found free books and, if you have, what treasures did you take away? And has anyone tried taking Craigslist users up on their free book listings?

We used to have a “free books” pile outside the English office at Canisius, but I never picked anything up! I remember debating taking a book from the TCD Library’s lost and found once (it had been sitting there for three weeks) but when I went back, it was gone. One hopes it was reunited with its actual owner!

Aw, that would be very nice if it found its person! Kind of cosmic. : )
