Clip Show: Book Cover Edition

December 17, 2009 at 12:10 am 2 comments

At risk of beating the clip show concept to death, here’s a collection of links relating to the most visible part of a book — its cover. While some literati will judge you if you use a book’s cover as an indicator of its worth, with a mediocre book, the cover could literally make or break the reading experience.

First, an article from the New York Times about good books with bad covers, and what to do about them. I wouldn’t have read that copy of Huck Finn either, to be frank — and, like Joe Queenan, my unread books are all significantly uglier than my read ones.

Second, a few collections of exceptional book covers, found here and here. Some of the books in that first link are self-published, but overall, they’re just fun to browse through. I want to look up the plot summaries for most of the books at the second site right now!

Third, here’s a site that judges books in a Cake Wrecks style. Leave it to a former librarian to be able to make an entire blog about cover snark, including a weekly Mammary Monday!

Fourth, head on over to Amazon to vote for the best book cover of 2009. Hooray!

Lastly, if you’re stuck with a good book and a bad cover, there’s always the old-fashioned paper bag solution.
