The whole book is like that, surprisingly enough. A lot of it focuses on the political intrigue and drama of the Italian rulers for whom Michelangelo worked, and there was no shortage of danger for him. Stone has a particularly riveting writing style, though; even the parts of the book that focus on Michelangelo sculpting and painting manage to be exciting.

Thank goodness! It’s my favorite book (seriously–I’ve thought long and hard about this) so I was worried you wouldn’t like it! Anne Fadiman is an essay-goddess.
